Nutritional Needs of Senior Pets

The food your pet eats plays an important part in his or her overall health and well-being. A nutritious, complete and balanced diet is an essential part of an active, healthy lifestyle for any aged dog or cat, but becomes even more significant after age 7*.

Nutritional needs may change or fluctuate upon reaching senior status, and it’s important to take this into account when selecting your pet’s diet.2

With advancing age, the optimal range for key nutrients becomes narrower, making it easier to tip into dietary deficiencies or excesses. For example, reduced levels of phosphorous and sodium are important to maintain kidney and heart health in older dogs and cats. That’s why it’s important to feed a premium diet such as Hill’s™ Science Diet™ Mature Adult range, specially formulated for pets over the age of 7 years. Key nutritional factors in older pets include:

Water
Protein
Fat
Energy
Minerals

Phosphorous, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium, Chloride

* 5 years for large and giant breed dogs – dogs over 25kg bodyweight.

Nutrition and your senior pet

Nutritional Goals in the older pet are to:

  • Maintain ideal body condition and body weight
  • Minimise disease risk
  • Disease management - reduce signs and/or slow disease progression
  • Improve the quality and longevity of life

Hill's understands that the dietary requirements of senior pets differ from those of young and middle aged pets. Older animals may be less able to cope with nutrient excesses or deficiencies, or changes in nutrient intake and quality. Therefore, foods for mature dogs and cats should meet daily nutrient allowances strictly and consistently. We can improve the quality, and possibly the length of life of older animals through life-long proper nutritional management.

Transitioning to a New Diet

When switching to a new diet, a gradual change will make it more likely for your cat or dog to accept the new food and will also minimise the risk of gastrointestinal upsets. Mix a small amount of the new food in with the old food on the first day. Gradually increase the quantity of new food and decrease the quantity of the old food each day over a 7 to 10 day period.

Hill’s™ Prescription Diet™

Nutrition of healthy older pets is integral to keeping these patients well throughout their remaining years. Consideration also needs to be given to nutrition of older pets with illnesses, given that older animals are more likely than their younger counterparts to suffer from a variety of disorders.

Hill’s™ Prescription Diets™ are formulated to address specific medical conditions. Hill’s™ Prescription Diet™ products are only available through veterinary clinics, because a veterinary professional who knows your pet's health and history should be the one to make a prescription food recommendation. Your veterinarian will supervise your pet's progress and make appropriate adjustments should your pet's health change.

How do Hill’s™ Prescription Diets™ work?

There are three ways in which Hill’s™ Prescription Diet™ products have their therapeutic effects:

  1. Decrease the intake of one or more nutrients: for example, Hill’s™ Prescription Diet™ k/d™ for treating kidney disease has reduced protein, phosphorus and sodium levels to reduce the workload on the kidneys
  2. Increase the intake of specific nutrients: Hill’s™ Prescription Diet™ i/d™ for treating gastrointestinal disease has increased levels of B-complex vitamins to help replace nutrients lost with vomiting and diarrhoea, and added soluble and insoluble fibre to normalise intestinal motility.
  3. Create a specific physiological response: Hill’s™ Prescription Diet™ j/d™ for arthritis features high levels of the omega 3 fatty acid EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). EPA has anti-inflammatory effects and reduces the rate of cartilage destruction in arthritic joints.

Hill’s™ Prescription Diets™ for management of common old age diseases. All of these diets are Complete & Balanced for long term feeding.
